Reform of the Immigration Law in Spain: main changes and their impact in 2025\u20132026<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Spain has approved a new regulation of the Immigration Law<\/strong> which implies a of the most comprehensive reforms in recent years<\/strong> in the matter. The main modification is included in the Royal Decree 1155\/2024<\/strong>, Published on November 20, 2024 and in force since May 20, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>

What changes with the new regulations?<\/h3>

The reform introduces substantial modifications to several aspects of the Spanish immigration system:<\/p>

1. Simplification and modernization of residence and work permits<\/strong>
The new rules unify and clarify procedures, with the aim of to streamline and make more consistent applications for residence and employment<\/strong>. Initial residence permits now have a standard period of one year<\/strong>, with possible renewals of up to four years<\/strong> in many cases.<\/p>

2. Transformation of the \u201crootedness\u201d system\u201d<\/strong>
The process of granting residency based on residency\u2014a traditional way to regularize the status of foreigners who have been in Spain for some time\u2014is being reorganized. Now there are five modalities<\/strong>Social, socio-labor, family, socio-educational, and "second chance" support. Furthermore, the minimum period of residence<\/strong> required from three to two years in most cases<\/strong>, facilitating access.<\/p>

3. Extended family reunification<\/strong>
Clearer shapes are created for the family residence<\/strong>, including relatives of Spanish citizens and the extension of the maximum age of dependent children up to 26 years old<\/strong>.<\/p>

4. Study and work placements<\/strong>
Authorizations for study purposes are being made more flexible. For example, authorized students can work until 30 hours per week<\/strong>, and the chances of transitioning to work permits after studies are improved.<\/p>

Early results after implementation<\/h3>

Official data shows that, following the entry into force of the immigration regulations, Applications for residence and work permits increased significantly<\/strong>. Between May 20 and October 31, 2025, approximately 50% % plus requests<\/strong> compared to the first period of the year, which indicates an active response from the foreign population to the regulatory improvements.<\/p>

Objectives of the reform<\/h3>
